Continuous monitoring of an arterial pulse using a pressure sensor attached on the epidermis is an important technology for detecting the early onset of cardiovascular disease and assessing personal health status. Our group reported the inorganic piezoelectric sensor on an ultrathin plastic achieves conformal contact with the complex texture of the rugged skin, which allows to respond to the tiny pulse changes arising on the surface of epidermis. The characteristics of the sensor has high sensitivity, short response time and good mechanical stability. To demonstrate the possibility of self-powered and real-time pulse monitoring system, the wireless transmission of detected arterial pressure signals to a smart phone is also included.

Moreover, in modern society, numerous people around the world have suffered from hypertension, which may induce various types of cardiovascular diseases such as stroke, heart failure, coronary artery disease, etc. Our group reported a wearable piezoelectric blood pressure sensor using an extremely sensitive piezoelectric material on ultrathin plastics to obtain high quality of pulse signals for continuous non-invasive arterial pressure monitoring. The results of accuracy tests showed mean error and standard deviation satisfied an international standard for validation of the sphygmomanometer.
